Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical substance derived from the cannabis plant, commonly known as marijuana or hemp. A particular type of CBD has been authorized in the United States as a medication for managing epilepsy.

The cannabis plant is abundant in over 80 chemicals, collectively known as cannabinoids. Among them, Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the most renowned. However, CBD is extracted from hemp, a variety of cannabis that contains minimal THC levels. CBD seems to influence specific brain chemicals, but its effects diverge from those of THC.

Medical Potential

  • Epilepsy: CBD has shown significant effects in treating drug-resistant epilepsy, such as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. Epidiolex, an FDA-approved medication primarily composed of CBD, is used to treat these types of seizures.
  • Anxiety and Depression: Research suggests CBD may have anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects. Although the exact mechanisms are not fully understood, studies are investigating its potential benefits for anxiety disorders, social anxiety disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
  • Pain Management: CBD shows promise in alleviating chronic pain and inflammation. Sativex, an oral spray containing both CBD and THC, is approved for managing pain and muscle spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis (MS).
  • Other Applications: CBD is also being studied for its potential in treating Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and symptoms related to cancer (such as nausea and appetite loss).
