CBD oil has surged in popularity across the UK, with over 6 million people, or 11% of the population, having used it in the past year.

Though CBD oil seems like a recent trend, the cannabis plant has a long history, dating back 12,000 years, and has been used globally for millennia as a natural remedy for stress and pain relief, with Emperor Sheng Nong of China even developing a cannabis-based medicinal tea in 2737 BC.

In the last century, advancements in organic chemistry have allowed CBD to be isolated from the cannabis plant, leading to its mass production and a global market valued at $4.95 billion in 2023, with an impressive annual growth rate of 26%.

The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency categorizes CBD oil as a food, meaning manufacturers can't claim medical benefits, yet many users have shared positive reviews, reporting improvements in mood, pain relief, and sleep quality from CBD oils, balms, gummies, and creams.

Although more research is needed to fully understand CBD oil's benefits, studies have shown promising results, particularly for epilepsy. In 2018, the FDA approved Epidiolex, a purified CBD drug, for treating epilepsy disorders like Dravet and Lennox-Gastaut syndromes, with clinical trials showing it can significantly reduce seizure frequency in patients unresponsive to conventional treatments.
